COLUMBUS, Ga. (TELEMUNDO Atlanta) – On the eve of the ‘Memorial Day’ holiday, state and local authorities are asking drivers to make highway safety and aquatic recreation centers a priority.
The Georgia State Patrol and the Governor’s Office of Traffic Safety urge everyone to buckle up and make sure children under the age of eight ride in child seats.
Georgia is participating in the national “Click It or Ticket” seat belt awareness campaign that ends June 4.
For its part, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will provide navigation and safety information to those who wish to enjoy the weekend on a lake or river.
Preliminary data indicates that the number of deaths in traffic accidents went from seven deaths on Memorial Day Weekend in 2018, to 15 people on the same date in 2022.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 56 percent of people who died in traffic crashes in the state in 2021 were not wearing seat belts.

As for rivers, lakes and the like, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, they investigated 23 boating deaths and responded to 57 drownings in 2022.
Rangers made 287 boating under the influence (BUI) arrests last year, which is a 55 percent increase from the 185 BUI arrests made in 2018.
The blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit in Georgia for drivers of motor vehicles and boats and operators of personal watercraft is 0.08.
Meanwhile, more than 2 million people are expected to travel through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport this weekend, making it the busiest in the entire country.
Projections show that more than 350,000 people are expected to pass through the Atlanta airport this Friday alone.
