The popular portable gaming PC “Steam Deck” has been improved to work better when connected to an external display, resulting in improved performance for the sci-fi blockbuster game “Starfield.” These are made possible by the preview update “Steam Deck OS 3.4.3”. It is available in the Steam Deck OS Preview Channel, where you can try out new features currently being tested, and you can join by going to Settings > System > System Update Channel. There are two main new features in this version. One is variable refresh rate (VRR) and HDR support when connecting an external display. HDR can be enabled if the display supports it, and VRR can be enabled from the display settings if you have a compatible USB-C adapter. Another says that Steam Deck’s standard color rendering has been adjusted to “emulate the sRGB color gamut,” resulting in “slightly warmer and more vibrant colors.” sRGB is an international standard color space, and it is also the de facto standard in the Windows environment. This change isn’t fixed; we’re also adding settings that allow users to fine-tune their display’s color vibrancy and color temperature. Another highlight is that the graphics driver has been updated to improve performance and functionality in many games. Chief among them is the improved performance of Starfield. As of mid-September, “Starfield” has not been verified to work with Steam Deck (Steam Deck compatibility is displayed as “Unknown”). Minor fixes also include “improving the stability of Bluetooth connections” and “slightly improving the speed of returning from sleep.” The former in particular was a serious problem for those who love wireless game controllers.
