Valve’s online store has been the victim of increasingly repeated attacks in recent days. Indeed, hackers manage to directly take control of developers’ accounts to inject malware into their games without their knowledge.
The idea then being to infect players’ machines when downloading a supposedly new version of the game. According to Valve, only around a hundred players are affected, and they were directly contacted by the company.
As Valve states in the email sent to affected players, “The version containing the suspected malware was quickly rolled back and purged from Steam, but we strongly encourage you to run a full system scan using an antivirus you trust or use regularly.“
In front of this situation, Valve also took another stepmore drastic: from October 24, developers will have to activate double authentication by SMS to connect to their Steamwork account, a platform that allows them to publish their game on the Valve store.
The change will therefore have no impact on players, who will be able to continue making their purchases on the store. But at least with the assurance that the downloaded game has not been compromised.
