Stefano Massini and Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams

Where do we go when we dream? What are we trying to say to ourselves in that suspended, further and intermediate space that welcomes us when we close our eyes? Everyone dreams, regardless of whether they retain memory of it: our existence is in fact a succession of nocturnal visions, complex imaginative architectures, whose construction obeys natural needs. So the question is: why do we dream? Why is it a vital and unavoidable need for human beings? Starting from these questions Stefano Massini completes a decade of work on The interpretation of dreams by Sigmund Freud, which began in 2008 and is dotted with numerous performances, including the stage of the novel published by Mondadori in 2017. Massini enters Freud’s world on tiptoe, putting his talent as a narrator at the service of a show freely inspired and based from the writings of the neurologist and psychoanalyst, which everyone knows but few have actually read, thanks to the accessibility of the text.

The show, produced by Teatro Stabile di Bolzano, Fondazione Teatro della Toscana, Teatro di Roma, in collaboration with the Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa, is currently at the Nazionale in Genoa.

The story of one of the milestones of the twentieth century thus attempts to give shape to numerous clinical cases, sometimes dramatic, sometimes grotesque, but each capable of revealing something about the laws that govern nocturnal scenes, thus alluding to the broader theme of dramaturgy. dreamlike, or rather the story of what is in all respects a sort of human catalog in which the public recognizes and finds itself.

Be familiar with the inner art

Close your eyes and open the curtain. This is the mandate of this show, because in this representation dreams are themselves understood as a form of theatre, as an invented and real life at the same time, as desire on the one hand and terror on the other. In fact, looking inside means opening up to a personal theatre, which eludes the superior control of the Ego and advances, exploring and translating the unspeakable.
