A new live-action advertisement for the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Stellar Blade has drawn significant attention, accumulating two million views on YouTube, according to Kotaku. The commercial, designed as a throwback to wilder eras of video game marketing, features live-action performers integrating the game’s lead character, Eve, into everyday scenarios like catching frisbees in a park and tucking a man into bed for a bedtime story.
A Commercial for the Ages
The ad emphasizes that players can take Stellar Blade with them on the go, showcasing Eve in various settings. While the commercial is described as “charming” in isolation, its oedipal undertones have mesmerized fans, with many YouTube comments like It should have been me!
reflecting a strong response. The advertisement’s approach is a stark contrast to more subdued modern game trailers, instead recalling an era of mascots in royal rumbles and brand activation stunts. The actress who plays Eve, Jade J, has shared behind-the-scenes images further suggesting the commercial uses live-action performers.
Technical Performance on Switch 2
The Switch 2 version of Stellar Blade, released in 2024, utilizes frame generation to achieve a stable 60 frames per second (FPS) from a 30 FPS input, as detailed by Digital Foundry via Nintendo Everything. While this results in a smoother visual presentation, it comes at a cost. GameSpot reports that the aggressive use of frame generation creates a noticeable delay in player inputs, making it difficult to time parries and dodges accurately. This delay can make the protagonist Eve feel sluggish and the combat challenging, as the game’s mechanics rely on precise timing. In response to player feedback from a demo, developer Shift Up added a frame generation toggle to the settings menu. Turning it off results in a lower, visually native frame rate of 35-45 FPS but significantly improves controller responsiveness and tightens the game’s feel.
Switch 2 Makes Graphical Compromises
Alongside its performance features, the Switch 2 port makes several graphical compromises compared to the PS5 version. According to the technical analysis, the game strips back environmental detail, experiences more pop-in, and reduces lighting effects, particularly in larger-scale shots. The internal docked resolution is approximately 540p with frame generation on and 648p with it off, while handheld mode runs at about 360p. Despite these technical adjustments, the Switch 2 version includes free Bayonetta crossover outfits for Eve, which are available to all players on the platform, as noted by Push Square.
