Dutch police in Bakel (Netherlands) arrested Raul’s stepfather on Friday evening on suspicion of involvement in the death of the 9-year-old child, according to Het Laatste Nieuws. The young boy had been subjected to horrific abuse including beatings with belts and punches, as well as being doused with boiling or ice-cold water on multiple occasions. Eventually, he lost consciousness and died. The child was then put into a sports bag and thrown into the Houtdok in Ghent.
The young Romanian lived with his mother, her boyfriend, and his 11-year-old sister in a dilapidated house in Ghent, near the Porte du Barrage. The abuse had been concealed, and instead of notifying the authorities, relatives had decided to dispose of his body. However, the mother and daughter were questioned by the police this week, and the statements of the latter led investigators to the place where the body had been thrown. Specialized teams carried out sonar searches and discovered the sports bag containing Raul’s remains. The mother was subsequently arrested by the investigating judge.
