Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Despite Challenges

In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) revealed that global renewable energy capacity additions reached record levels in 2023, defying economic headwinds and supply chain disruptions. The agency’s World Energy Transitions Outlook 2024 highlights a 25% increase in new installations compared to the previous year, with solar and wind leading the charge.

IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera emphasized the urgency of the transition: “The data shows that renewables are not just growing—they are accelerating. However, to meet our climate goals, we need to triple the current pace of deployment by 2030.” The report notes that solar photovoltaic (PV) installations alone accounted for 80% of all new renewable capacity in 2023, reflecting its status as the most cost-competitive energy source globally.

Francesco La Camera, IRENA Director-General, warned that while the energy transition is irreversible, its pace must align with the urgency of the climate crisis.

Regional disparities remain stark, with Asia contributing over 60% of new renewable capacity last year. China alone added 300 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind capacity. Europe saw significant growth, particularly in wind energy, while the United States added 30 GW of new capacity.

Despite the progress, challenges persist. The report warns that over 200 million people still lack access to electricity, predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia. IRENA calls for accelerated investment in grid infrastructure and decentralized solutions to bridge this gap.

Looking ahead, the outlook projects that renewables could supply 60% of global electricity by 2030 under current policies, but achieving the Paris Agreement targets would require 70% renewable electricity share by that same year. La Camera cautioned that the window for decisive action is closing, stressing the need for governments to implement bold policies and mobilize trillions in private and public financing.
