Only recently, thousands of people celebrated the summer solstice in British Stonehenge: On Wednesday morning, the sun rose just above the so-called Heelsstone outside the ring wall and threw its long shadow in the middle of the circular stone monument. Archaeologists also came across a comparable ritual site in the Netherlands: As recently became known, they identified a 4,000-year-old sanctuary near the town of Tiel, which consisted of several round burial mounds. This construct is also said to have been dedicated to the sun, the city administration announced.
