Street Fighter 6 reaches 2 million sales in just 5 weeks

He could be on his way to reaching his goal of 10 million lifetime sales.

Street Fighter 6 has been a real hit since its launch on June 2.

Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive – including my own review of Street Fighter 6 (89%) – and gamers have come from all over the world to toss fireballs and kick their legs with reckless abandon. The fighting game was hugely successful, so much so that Capcom revealed that it sold over two million copies in five weeks, including one million in the launch weekend alone.

Those are good numbers for the genre, and they seem on track to hit Capcom’s goal of 10 million lifetime sales. By comparison, Street Fighter 5 sold about 600,000 fewer copies in its first six weeks, missing its original goal of 2 million sales. It went on to sell around 7 million copies in seven years, making it the best-selling game on home consoles. Given that this game launched in a much worse state than Street Fighter 6, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the latter continue to sell out steadily. Mortal Kombat, the other major fighting game franchise, has sold at least 15 million copies in four years.

Capcom’s investment in the competitive SF6 scene will certainly help bolster those numbers. With a prize pool of $2 million for the next Capcom Cup – including $1 million for the overall winner – and more accessible play thanks to the modern control option which is tournament legal, I’m sure this will encourage people to take the game in hand and try their luck.

The first DLC character, Rashid, is also on the horizon, and three more fighters are planned for early next year. There’s plenty to cheer about, and as the game will inevitably get some nice discounts, that’ll make it even more tempting to pick it up, even if it’s just to try out its weird Yakuza-lite single-player mode.
