A student was injured and a 14-Year-old suspect is in custody following a shooting Wednesday afternoon at Warner Robins High School, according to the Houston County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. local time inside one of the school’s bathrooms.
Shooting at Warner Robins High School Leaves One Student Injured and 14-Year-Old in Custody
According to investigators, a verbal altercation between ninth-grade students escalated into a physical fight, during which the 14-year-old suspect brandished a firearm and shot the victim in the leg. Authorities initially reported that two people were injured, but Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton later clarified that only one person was hurt. The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Following the gunfire, the suspect fled the campus on foot. Law enforcement later apprehended the teen at around 3:20 p.m. in the nearby Huntington Hills neighborhood, approximately half a mile from the school. Authorities have not yet disclosed how the suspect obtained the firearm or what charges the teen will face.
School Lockdown, Controlled Dismissal, and Community Impact
In response to the shooting, the Houston County School District placed the campus under a Code Red, securing students and staff inside their classrooms. Roads surrounding the high school, including Demon Valley Road and S. Davis Drive, were temporarily closed as the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, the Houston County School District, the City of Warner Robins, and the Warner Robins Police Department responded to the active scene. A Georgia State Patrol helicopter also landed on campus.
Authorities later initiated a controlled dismissal, releasing students in phases with buses loaded first, followed by car riders, student drivers, and walkers. Principal Brett Wallace addressed the community in a letter, stating, Today was a hard day for our school and the entire community. We are grateful that the student who was injured is receiving care, and we are incredibly thankful for the quick response of law enforcement and first responders.
Officials noted that Warner Robins High School had conducted safety drills using the Centegix CrisisAlert System just a day prior to the shooting, practicing Code Yellow, Code Red, and Code Blue procedures.
School Closures and Support Services Scheduled for Students and Staff
Warner Robins High School will be closed for all students on Thursday and Friday. According to Principal Wallace, there will be no virtual learning during this closure. Teachers are scheduled to return on Friday, August 14, while students will return to campus on Monday, August 17.
Additional counselors and support staff will be available at the school on Friday and Monday to assist students and staff members. Principal Wallace emphasized the district’s goal to give students time to be at home, surrounded by family, to process and heal.
State and local leaders offered statements of support following the incident. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp expressed gratitude for the first responders whose actions quickly brought the situation under control and kept students, faculty, and staff safe.
U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock and Warner Robins Mayor LaRhonda W. Patrick also shared statements extending prayers and emphasizing community solidarity.
