A 14-year-old student opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School near Bangkok on Friday, killing five school staff members and wounding 23 others before taking his own life. Authorities confirmed the teenager also killed his two grandparents at their home earlier that morning using a legally registered firearm.
The sequence of violence began before dawn on Friday in a quiet neighborhood bordering rice fields on the outskirts of Bangkok. At approximately 5 a.m. local time, the 14-year-old boy shot his grandfather and grandmother dead in their two-story house in Bang Bua Thong, according to Police Colonel Thadsakorn Konthong. Each elderly relative suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. Investigators later noted that the weapon and ammunition belonged to the grandfather, and initial inspections revealed signs that the firearm had been searched for inside the grandfather’s bedroom.
Following the killings at the family home, the teenager boarded the school van that arrived to collect him, carrying the weapon and dozens of bullets concealed with him. He traveled roughly 18 kilometers to the Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province, arriving ahead of his classes. The co-educational state school has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students aged 12 to 18, supported by 147 teachers.

The student attended his first class as normal, but opened fire shortly after his second class began at 9:20 a.m., according to police timelines. Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee confirmed at the scene that five school staff members, including teachers and administrators, were killed when the violence erupted around 10 a.m.
Outside the school perimeter, the atmosphere turned chaotic as emergency responders and terrified students reacted to the gunfire. Amporn Niamfuang, who operates a restaurant situated 50 meters from the campus, described hearing a sharp change in the noise level on the narrow street.
“At first I heard just one gunshot, and there was a pause. And then there were multiple continuous shots. Students were running scared and pouring onto the street. Young girls were holding each other’s hands and crying. I went inside to hide.”

Inside classrooms, students sheltered under desks or hid in locked rooms while hearing shots echo from other buildings. Police officers subsequently moved through the corridors, knocking on doors to clear evacuation paths.
Hospital Tolls, Prime Minister Inspections, and the Gun Control Debate
Bangyai Hospital, located approximately 5 kilometers from the school, received 23 wounded individuals. Medical authorities confirmed that 10 of the injured remained in critical condition, with the majority suffering from gunshot wounds. Officials noted that the teenager had displayed recent signs of stress connected to his studies.
The tragedy has reignited scrutiny over civilian firearm regulations in Thailand. In response to the shooting, Prime Minister Anutin announced plans to propose legislation restricting the public carrying of firearms.
Family Background and Immediate Aftermath
The school announced that all classes will be suspended from August 10 through August 14, with faculty and staff instructed to work remotely during the mourning and investigation period.
