While the University of Burundi is experiencing a crying lack of audiences, students denounce the construction of small rooms at the Kamenge campus.
Some students attend classes in auditoriums. Due to the lack of audiences, others circulate with syllabuses in their hands and memorize notes, they prepare for the exam. Next to the old university restaurant, a building site. Masons are at work to deal with the shortage of classrooms.
The construction of the foundation of the blocks that will house the audiences makes a lot of saliva flow. “I don’t understand why the university continues to build audiences like basic schools in Burundi” says a bachelor’s degree student in psychology
“The construction of two blocks of three rooms for the first and two rooms for the second does not provide the solution to the problem of audiences”
For the students, the foundation clearly shows the small size of the future rooms. They will not be able to contain a large number of students who have recourse to the auditoriums of the Ecole Normale Supérieure.
The students deplore short-term solutions: “The university will always be obliged to spend other means in the construction of audiences”.
These students also denounce the waste of the building surface. “If the university continues to build in this style, there will be lack of space for other construction projects.”
A man met at the Kamenge campus believes that the state should provide funds to build upstairs buildings. “Blocks built in individual grouped styles are not durable like multi-storey blocks.” For him, the “responsible and laborious State” (Burundian government slogan) grants the university a small sum of money allocated to constructions.
The students call on the state and the university to build large audiences.
The greatness of a university is noticed by the quality training but also by the beauty of its infrastructures.
