“I could hear that the noise of the bus engine was abnormal”
Aged 17, Guillaume Bourcy is a student at ICET in the electrician-automation option. Like every day, he went to class by bus but this Monday’s journey did not go as planned. “We were moving forward and suddenly the bus stopped suddenly due to a breakdown,” he explains. “At first, I thought we were slipping because of the ice and snow, but the doors were moving. were open and wouldn’t close again. The driver didn’t really know what to do, he called a repairman but we had to wait two hours for him to arrive.” After realizing what was happening, after about fifteen minutes, the Houffalois went to find the driver to offer his help. “I could hear the abnormal noise the bus was making,” said the young man. “For me, it made sense to go and offer to repair the problem. I asked the driver if he knew where the valves were and the air circuits. He showed me a hatch and I knew how to access the mechanisms.” Although he was not in possession of his work equipment, the student was still able to find the flaw. “I think it was either a worn solenoid valve or a blown sensor,” adds the young mechanic. “The bus doors opened and that’s why the bus stopped, it’s a safety measure to avoid driving with the doors open.”
The bus left after 40 minutes instead of several hours
If at first, the driver was doubtful about the young man’s intervention, he ultimately accepted his help. “It’s true that at the start, the driver wasn’t very confident,” adds the student. “But I explained to him what I was studying at school and what I wanted to do later. He told me so let it happen.”
Although the bus was finally able to leave after only forty minutes instead of several hours, the vehicle was still returned to the garage for checks. On board, dozens of people congratulated Guillaume Bourcy, who thus saved them from working too many hours at work and arriving too late for school. “No one seemed too worried,” however, confided to us the young man who therefore provided valuable help thanks to his logic and his school option.
