Ohio was No. 5 with 505 visits per 1,000 residents.

Maine topped the list of emergency room visits with 596 per 1,000 residents, followed by Louisiana at 535. Indiana, Mississippi, North Dakota, Arkansas, New Hampshire and Michigan rounded out the top 10.

“This data provides a fascinating insight into which states are most injury-prone, whether that be self-inflicted or caused by a third-party,” Amr Hosny, spokesperson for New York Pain Care, said in the news release. “Maine records the highest rate of visits, with approximately 813,000 emergency room visits throughout 2021, which accounts for 3% of all visits across America.”

Nevada was found to be the state with the least amount of ER visits per 1,000 residents at 227.

West Virginia was also in the top 10 when it comes to EMS responses with 208 per 1,000 residents in 2018. Kentucky was ninth in the category with 194 responses.

The study took into account emergency room visit data from the American Health Association and ambulance response data from the National Association of State EMS officials, the news release said.
