From the weekend, 11 of 16 federal states will have summer holidays – this is noticeable on the streets in the north. Traffic was particularly backed up in and around Hamburg and Lower Saxony.

According to the Lower Saxony traffic management center, the A7 from Hanover to Hamburg was particularly affected on Friday. A traffic jam formed between Walsrode and Bad Fallingbostel as early as midday, and traffic also came to a standstill on the A352 heading north and further on on the A7 near Mellendorf. Another sticking point: Hamburg. A spokesman for the ADAC said on Friday afternoon that the fear that vacationers and rush-hour traffic would cause too much traffic jams was confirmed. Traffic was backed up on both the A7 on both sides of the Elbe Tunnel and on the A1. In addition, many roads in Hamburg are closed due to the Water World Triathlon. The event ends on Sunday.

At walking pace over the A7

There was also a lot of activity on Friday on the A7 southbound near Göttingen. From there it just went at a walking pace. Drivers made only slow progress on the A2 in the direction of Dortmund near Langenhagen. On the A27 in the direction of Bremen, traffic near Walsrode was backed up for several kilometers. According to the police, there were no major traffic jams in Schleswig-Holstein despite the high volume of traffic. However, the ADAC expects that drivers will have to be patient, especially on the weekends, especially on the A7 around the Rader Hochbrücke near Rendsburg and on the A1 in the direction of Lübeck and Fehmarn.

The start of vacation causes a wave of travel

With a view to the traffic situation over the weekend, the experts therefore advise: drive early or in the evening hours. The reason: Berlin, Brandenburg and Hamburg started their summer holidays on Thursday, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein will follow on Monday. Another wave of travelers is also expected from Bremen, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. In the south and in the center of the Netherlands, students also have free time.

The ADAC also advises to switch to quieter routes or, if possible, to choose a different travel day. Suitable days of the week are therefore Tuesday and Thursday. Waiting times on the freeways can be particularly uncomfortable in some places due to the high temperatures. The heat could build up on the roadways. Travelers should prepare themselves and, for example, have enough water on board, experts advise.

Additional truck driving ban should relieve

The ADAC had previously predicted that in terms of traffic jams the previous year’s level could even be exceeded. “Even at Easter and Pentecost there was a lot more going on on the roads than in 2022 or before,” said an ADAC traffic expert. Accordingly, there were 38,351 traffic jams on the weekends of the 2022 summer holidays counted in Germany. And this year, too, travelers should have expected longer travel times, especially on the access roads to the mountains, to the lakes and to the coasts. The ADAC is hoping for at least some relief from the additional truck holiday driving ban, which applies every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the end of August.

Going on vacation by plane? New system at Hanover Airport

But even those who don’t travel by car, but fly on vacation by plane, could be confronted with problems again and arrive stressed at their vacation destination. On Thursday, climate activists of the “last generation” paralyzed the airport in Hamburg for several hours. There have been long waiting times in recent years, even without protests from climate activists. Hanover Airport has therefore introduced a new system that should lead to less waiting time for travelers.
