If small, red pimples sprout on the skin after sunbathing, it is probably Mallorca acne or a sun allergy. Tips to counteract itching and rashes.

Plenty of sun – summer can be so wonderful. If only some people didn’t suddenly get small, red pimples on their skin that itched, burned and spoiled for sunbathing. Sometimes the rash starts on the upper arm and then gets worse every year. Pimples can even appear on the legs and insteps. Is the cause a sun allergy? There are two different types of sun-related skin reactions: sun allergy and Mallorca acne.

Sun allergy: UV-A radiation is the cause of skin rashes

Legs, arms and décolleté are typical areas of the body for a rash caused by a so-called sun allergy. This is not an allergic reaction, but a disease, polymorphic light eruption. This is triggered by UV-A radiation when you go out in the sun without protection, especially in early summer. It’s not yet clear why some people get sun allergies and others don’t.

High sun protection factor, antihistamines and hardening prevent

A very high sun protection factor is particularly important for people who are allergic to the sun. If the allergy occurs, cooling, anti-itch creams and gels help. Allergy tablets, so-called antihistamines, also relieve the itching. But the allergy doesn’t go away. Therefore: get out of the sun and cool down a lot, for example with moist compresses. To prevent sun allergies, you can gradually harden the skin with artificial UVA light as early as spring. Alternatively, go out in the sun a little longer every day, but always with a high sun protection factor.

Mallorca acne: reaction to sunscreen ingredients

In contrast to sun allergy sufferers who have not applied sunscreen and whose rash is caused by the UV light of the sun, sufferers of Mallorca acne have usually applied sunscreen well. With them, the sunscreen is responsible for the rash. Because the Mallorca acne is triggered by fats and emulsifiers in sunscreen. In combination with UV light, these substances form certain irritants in the sebaceous glands, which cause inflammation – especially in areas of the body with many sebaceous glands: on the face, décolleté and upper body.

Looking for shade – cosmetics without fats and emulsifiers

If Mallorca acne occurs, the only thing that helps is to cover the skin completely and stay in the shade. To prevent Mallorca acne, you should use products that do not contain fats or emulsifiers. This applies to sunscreens as well as other body care products, such as after-sun products. Whether with or without fragrances is a matter of taste – but fragrance-free products are better for sensitive skin.

Cooling aloe vera cream and zinc ointment help with pimples

If pimples appear, quark or aloe vera creams can cool and inhibit the inflammation. Vinegar water is suitable for drying out sun pimples. Zinc ointment belongs in your holiday luggage as first aid: it has an anti-inflammatory and anti-itch effect.

Proper sun protection is critical to recovery

The be-all and end-all for an improvement of the skin rash is and remains the right sun protection: use at least sun protection factor 50 in case of sun allergy, avoid products with fats and emulsifiers in case of Mallorca acne.
