Sun: covering the stroller with a blanket, a good idea?

Want to protect your child from the sun? Your reflex may be to cover his stroller with a blanket. It can, however, have the opposite effect and increase the heat inside the stroller, according to an Australian study.

The researchers found that it only takes 20 minutes for it to be warmer in the stroller than in the open air. The temperature rises by 3.7°C when the stroller is covered with a flannel fabric and by 2.6°C if it is muslin. And there’s no point in attaching a battery-powered fan to it, because then the heat drops by just 0.1°C. So what to do to protect baby? Here are the researchers’ recommendations:

Covering the stroller with a damp muslin cloth lowers the temperature by 3°C. Adding a fan cools it an additional 1.7 degrees, for a total of 4.7°C. Every 15 to 20 minutes, dampen the muslin fabric using a spray bottle. Avoid leaving the child in the sun in a stationary stroller, even if it is covered with damp muslin. Offer him regular water or breast feedings to keep him well hydrated. Check often for signs of heatstroke, such as hot, red skin or lethargy. If so, quickly take it to a cool place and contact Info-Santé at 811.

Your child is bored? So much the better!

Your child complains that he is bored? Rather than trying to entertain him, it’s better to let him be bored, because there are several advantages to finding the time long, says a Spanish psychologist.

Being bored is not pleasant for a child, but it is useful for his development. By pushing the toddler to find ways to occupy himself, boredom can indeed favor his autonomy, initiative and creativity.

It also forces him to listen to what he likes, thus allowing him to discover his fields of interest and his tastes. The bored child also learns to tolerate discomfort and frustration, a quality that will serve him throughout his life.

For all these reasons, the psychologist advises parents to avoid suggesting all kinds of activities to their child as soon as he is bored. Helping him find his own solutions will do him more service, she believes.

Moreover, even if it is tempting to fill the moments of boredom of a child with a screen, it is preferable to abstain. In the long run, screens make children more prone to boredom because they increase the amount of stimulation they need to feel good, notes the psychologist.

BEHAVIOR

Telling a child to calm down is useless

Is your toddler in crisis? It is best to avoid asking him to calm down, as this may increase his distress. Here are the explanations and advice from two specialists.

Say things like, “Calm down! or “Stop crying!” is in most cases useless. Indeed, these words negate the child’s emotions and lead him to believe that it is not okay to cry or get angry. He may then feel even worse. Also, being told to calm down doesn’t teach him to deal with difficult emotions, but rather to repress them.

However, when a child experiences these kinds of emotions, he needs to feel understood. Phrases like “You’re sad right now, do you want me to sit with you?” or “You’re mad your toy broke, do you want to talk about it?” allow him to validate his emotions and show him how to express them with words. It also helps her understand that it’s okay to feel angry, sad, or frustrated at times.

Alcohol consumption of fathers before pregnancy: impacts?

It has long been recommended that women avoid alcohol when they want to become pregnant and during pregnancy. But this warning should be addressed to both parents rather than just mothers, according to a US study.

L’Alcohol before and during pregnancy can cause birth defects to the baby and harm the development of its organs. Until recently, it was thought that only the consumption of the mother was in question.

By carrying out research on mice, scientists have found that regular alcohol consumption alters the activity of genes transmitted by sperm and that this can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome in pups.

This serious health problem is characterized by developmental and learning disabilities as well as skull and facial malformations. Alcohol ingested by male mice even caused more severe malformations than when the exposure came from the mother.

Further studies will be needed to confirm these results. In the meantime, the researchers recommend including fathers in alcohol prevention messages around pregnancy. And when a couple wants to have a child, they believe that both partners should avoid drinking.
