In this new series, Mirco Canoci, our documentary information specialist, shares his reading recommendations. The objective is to introduce you to new authors, subjects or simply new stories, through the informed eye of our librarian. In this third article, head to China to discover a famous strategist: Sun Tzu and his Art of War.

Sun Tzu’s Art of War

“He who excels at resolving difficulties does so before they arise. »

Contrary to what one might believe, this sentence does not come from a personal development book, but from a work of military treatise. The art of War by Sun Tzu stands out among these. In general, when it’s a book about war tactics written by someone who did it, it’s always a great book.

The legend of Sun Tzu

The Art of War was compiled and written in the year 1078 by Sun Tzu. However, the history of its author remains very vague, given that various theses circulate, such as that he never existed, or that he was in reality Sun Bin or Wu Zixu. Regardless of the legend, the most important thing is that his writings remain and are still used in military schools, such as the Chinese and Taiwanese schools.

More than a military treatise: A treasure trove of strategy for all situations

Sun Tzu’s writings are also used by economists wanting to use these military tactics in the entrepreneurial world. What is striking in this book is its author’s reflection and analysis on combat strategy.

This book goes against certain military precepts having been written by Julius Caesar for example. When most great military strategists can show little wisdom and desire to conquer at all costs, Sun Tzu favors peace and reflection when it can be done and only invokes war as a last resort.

You will have understood, whether you are in search of wisdom, personal and financial development or a fine military strategist, this book must be read and analyzed.
