Last March, the National Superintendence of Higher Education (Sunedu) published the III Biennial Report on the University Reality in Peru, which includes two national rankings of university institutions called Historical Ranking of University Institutions (1980-2020) and Excellence 2021, which indicate which are the country’s study houses that stand out for their performance. One fact to consider is that it is a biannual report, so it remains valid until the launch of the next one in 2023.
According to Sunedu, the first of the rankings takes into account the historical record of Web of Science during the period 1980 -2020 and contemplates the performance of 58 universities according to their scientific production, scientific impact, international excellence and number of current patents; while the second was developed following the methodology proposed by the ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities), and due to its greater demand (since it takes into account indicators of academic and scientific excellence), only 19 Peruvian universities were considered.

Below, we present the 10 of the best universities in Peru according to the National Superintendence of Higher Education (Sunedu), with their respective score obtained in the Historical Ranking of University Institutions (1980-2020):
- Peruvian University Cayetano Heredia: 100 points
- Pontifical Catholic University of Peru: 78.25 points
- National University of San Marcos: 54.72 points
- National University of Engineering: 25.30 points
- La Molina National Agrarian University: 24.90 points
- San Antonio de Abad National University in Cusco: 23.10 points
- Peruvian University of Applied Sciences: 15.65 points
- National University of the Peruvian Amazon: 13.01 points
- San Agustin de Arequipa National University: 12.04 punros
- Southern Scientific University: 12.03 points
