To steal these bins, however, customers do not show any particular creativity. The technique is simple: leave the beer tray at the bottom of the shopping cart. “As a cashier, it is physically impossible to see the entire contents of a shopping cart,” the expert explains to Het Laatste Nieuws. “During our enforcement action, we naturally intervened when someone left with an unpaid record. The customer caught in the act would usually respond straight away: ‘Oops, I forgot to mention that to the cashier, sorry’. Some even raised their voices by declaring: ‘It’s up to the store staff to check everything, not us’.”
