Support for Eating Disorders: Solidarité Anorexia Bulimia Association (SAB 56) Mission, Discussions, and Resources

2024-01-27 05:30:02

What is the mission of the Solidarité anorexia bulimia association (Sab 56)?

Emmanuelle Liset (EL): People who suffer from eating disorders (TCA) and their loved ones feel alone. The association, which has existed since 2006, welcomes them every month during a discussion group led by people who are or have been concerned. This allows us to discuss what we feel in a non-medical environment.

What are TCAs?

EL: This disorder is like a huge complex. There is an inner discomfort that applies to the body. We wonder how to control it. This can be, for example, through food or sport. When you suffer from it, food occupies all your thoughts. Eating is no longer natural. These disorders are complex because they have multiple origins. They can come from an accumulation of things or from a single trauma.

How is the discussion group useful?

EL: There is no judgment. We are listening and caring.

Nathalie Bourgeois (NB): Everyone can be a resource person. We can recommend readings or professionals. The advantage is that there is distance. A parent may ask a question that they would not dare ask their child. In recovery, there are sometimes relapses. You can join the group at that time.

Do we always find the same people?

EL: No, because their presence is linked to a situation and emotion. It’s very unpredictable. The profiles of the participants are very varied. There are men and women of all generations.

Are adolescents more vulnerable?

NB: Yes, because they experience a lot of bodily changes, not to mention dissociation with their parents. For them, verbalization is difficult. Besides, during the discussion group, we are not obliged to speak.

EL: On social media, teenagers are inundated with images that can be filtered or “photoshopped.” It’s difficult to build yourself up. They may feel an inner uncertainty that resonates with an uncertain future.

Is the need for help growing?

EL: Yes, people need more and more support. We live in an anxiety-provoking society. People engage in addictive behaviors to escape discomfort. And food is an addiction like any other. A palliative. This comes down to mental health.

According to the Solidarité bulimie 56 association, certain thoughts are not harmless and can reflect real discomfort. (Le Télégramme/Association Solidarité anorexia bulimia 56.)

Are you seeing new forms of TCA?

EL: Let’s say that certain disorders are now recognized as being obsessive. This is the case with orthorexia. Those who suffer from it only eat very healthy meals. It becomes an injunction linked to a search for perfection. There is also bigorexia. Those who suffer from it do a lot of sport to control their weight and get an adrenaline rush. We see that a lot of boys go through this.

A new day hospital should take care of TCA for patients aged 12 to 18. It’s good news…

EL: Yes, it’s great for the mental health of sufferers as well as that of their parents. They will no longer feel helpless.
