In the middle of summer, two British friends traveled to Italy to spend their summer holidays. The tourists then demanded that the sandwich they ordered be cut in half. Finally, the restaurant charges them the sum of 2 euros extra.

Incredible but true. The events took place on June 18. On vacation in Italy, two British friends decided to go to the restaurant “Bar Pace”, in Gera Lario, on the shores of the famous Lake Como. While placing the order, one of the two tourists asked that his sandwich be served on two different plates so that he could share it with his friend.

So far, everything is going well. Nevertheless, after eating, the tourists were entitled to their receipt. But looking at the contents of it, they realized that the restaurant charged them the sum of 2 euros for cutting the sandwich in half.

Furious, the two Britons shared their experience on Tripadvisor. “There were two of us and we asked for a toasted sandwich to share at the table. We have to pay because the toast was cut in half?” wrote one of the two tourists.

“It never happened to me in Italy: It never happened to me in any of the places I visited in the world,” he added.

Contacted by our colleagues from the Italian newspaper The Republic, the owner of the “Bar Pace”, Cristina Biacchi, defended this billing. “Additional requests have a cost. We had to use two plates instead of one and the washing time is doubled, then two placemats”, explained Cristina Biacchi.

“It wasn’t just a toasted sandwich, it also had fries inside. It took us a long time to cut it in half,” she continued, indicating that the two customers made no complaints when paying the bill and that if that had been the case, the sum would have been removed from note.

It is not the first time that Italian restaurants have charged the sum of 2 euros for an “extra service”. Monday, August 7, an Italian shared her receipt on Facebook.

On her way to Osteria Del Cavolo in Finale Ligure, Liguria, Ida Germano, 76, had requested an extra empty plate for her three-year-old granddaughter so she could sample some basil pesto pasta ordered by her mother. However, on the bill, the restaurant also charged the sum of 2 euros for this plate.
