Real story

He knows firsthand how painful neuropathy can be. 34-year-old Briton Aaron Spear. At the age of 27, doctors discovered he had type 1 diabetes. The diagnosis for the man sounded like a bolt from the blue. He could not immediately cope with the blow of fate and for some time did not monitor his blood sugar levels at all. As a result, he developed peripheral neuropathy, that is, all of his nerves outside the brain and spinal cord were affected.

“I felt like I was walking barefoot in the snow 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This pain never went away, it was like I was getting an electric shock at night, I couldn’t sleep normally,” Aaron told reporters.

In an attempt to get rid of unpleasant sensations, he could drink two bottles of wine a night.

Alcohol, of course, did not make the man healthier: doctors eventually diagnosed him with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). If this condition is not stopped in time, the person may fall into a coma and die. At the hospital, doctors also found Aaron to have a liver infection, an enlarged spleen, and periorbital cellulitis.

However, after discharge, the man did not lead a healthy lifestyle – on the contrary, he became addicted to illegal substances. It took Aaron several years to overcome drug addiction, and during this time he came close to death several times.

“Neuropathy is still a problem, I have PTSD and am trying to get support for PTSD. But I just tell myself: I’m lucky to be alive,” Speer told the publication. Daily Mail.
