Around a hundred ski instructors ski down the slopes synchronously. Some believe it is fake. One of the initiators explains.

Suvretta Sports School

  • A video that looks like it was created using artificial intelligence (AI) is currently circulating on social media.

  • One of the initiators – Patrik Wiederkehr from Suvretta Sports St. Moritz – clarifies: The video is real and not AI-generated.

  • It didn’t even take many rehearsals, thanks in part to some professionals who had already taken part in formation running at championships.

Everyone is in formation, the camera hovers over the heads of the snow sports enthusiasts, and then it starts: in almost military synchrony, around a hundred skiers ski skillfully down the powdery ski slope. So synchronous that you might think that artificial intelligence is involved. Some Instagram users who have seen the video, which has been shared several times, also suspect this: “Great idea – about AI,” someone writes. Another speculates: “Are they robots?” 20 minutes asked the initiator, who revealed the secret in conversation.

“Not with AI, but with normal I”

Patrik Wiederkehr is managing director of the Suvretta Sports School in St. Moritz GR and one of the initiators of the video, which has been viewed by hundreds of thousands. When asked about the authenticity of the video, the sports director smiles and explains: “It was definitely not made with AI, just with normal I.”

On the day of the recording, almost 110 ski instructors from the sports school were on site to take part in the now legendary video. A section of the slopes in the Suvretta ski area in St. Moritz was closed specifically for this purpose. – All day? – “No,” explains Wiederkehr. “It took us about an hour.”

There were some formation driving professionals there

Overall, there was never a real dress rehearsal. «We did a few dry runs. Once in spring and once in autumn. But only a fraction were there. “The day before the recording we rehearsed the line-up again with around 90 percent of the extras and that was it,” says Wiederkehr.

The sports director was very pleased that it worked so well, but not surprised: “Some of the ski instructors have already taken part in formation skiing championships.” This skiing discipline is about keeping to a certain formation in a group.

That’s what lies behind it

The video was published several times via Instagram: by Suvrettasports, by St. Moritz and by Bogner Official, and received a great response. “This is the post with the most likes on all three channels,” says Wiederkehr happily.

So the marketing strategy worked. The aim of the video shoot was to publicize the new equipment partnership between the Suvretta Sports School and Bogner. The latter is a clothing store that sells, among other things, ski fashion.
