Swarovski wants to keep the number of employees in Wattens

The Tyrolean crystal group Swarovski is currently not planning any further staff cuts at the Wattens site. The number of employees should be kept at around 3,000 – if the business develops as planned, CEO Alexis Nasard restricted to journalists on Wednesday. A general manager for the Tyrolean location should be found by the end of the month. The complete withdrawal of Swarovski from Russia that was announced this year has already been completed, Nasard reported.

The group expects sales to increase by around four to seven percent compared to the previous year. CEO Nasard saw a “respectable performance in a difficult environment” in the current year in view of inflation, consumer sentiment and the fragile geopolitical situation, and the year was “not easy”. The business-to-business (B2B) business has developed particularly strongly, with an increase of ten percent expected by December.

In any case, they wanted to stick to the Wattens site, it was emphasized. Investments of 50 million euros by 2025 are to flow into modernization and secure “sustainable jobs”. Processes are also to be made more efficient and the site secured as a result. 3,107 people are currently employed in Wattens.

At Swarovski, however, one could already see the first successes of a new strategy. The growth in the automotive sector in particular, which is currently at 71 percent, was highlighted. Swarovski is currently designing vehicle components for BMW, and talks are being held with other manufacturers. The crystal group contributes elements for fittings or headlights, for example. Because e-mobility is becoming more important and conventional engines are becoming less important, the interior is becoming more and more important as a differentiating feature, it said. There was still enormous growth potential here – and production is also an essential element of the Wattens site.

The crystal group had faced severe turbulence in recent years. This affected both the group management and the economic situation due to the corona crisis. Ex-CEO Robert Buchbauer initiated a restructuring of the group – including large-scale layoffs in Wattens – with which part of the family clan did not agree. Legal disputes were the result. Last year, Nasard was the first person from outside the family to take over the management of the company.
