Working conditions in question

Over the last eighteen months, Swiss has recruited 1,800 flight attendants, while it had laid off around 300 during the pandemic, said Dieter Vranckx. Swiss will continue to recruit in 2024, primarily Swiss nationals, counting on a 10% increase in its activity.

The boss of the airline, which posted an operating profit of 456 million francs in 2022, did not report any difficulties in hiring, while the situation is tense throughout Europe. On the contrary, he said he was surprised by the influx of applications.

Concerning the standoff with employees for better working conditions, Swiss hopes to finalize discussions with the union around a new collective labor agreement (CCT) by the end of September. The goal is for staff to be able to vote before the end of the year, the director said. As a reminder, a first version was refused in March.

“In our eyes, it is important that the CCT under discussion improves the conditions offered to our employees. In terms of remuneration and pace of work,” said Dieter Vranckx.

Environment and prices

Concerning the improvement of its energy balance, Swiss is banking on modernizing its fleet by replacing certain aircraft with devices that emit less CO2, on synthetic kerosene and related technological innovations. These measures should allow the company to reduce its CO2 emissions by half.

Furthermore, in an interview in the NZZ on Sunday, Dieter Vranckx says he foresees an increase in air fares in the future, “in the medium and long term”. According to him, this increase is necessary to invest in more environmentally friendly technologies. But immediately, the boss of Swiss anticipates lower prices in 2024.
