The Swiss automotive market started the second half on a positive note. The number of cars put into circulation in July rebounded year on year, although it remains significantly below the level before the coronavirus pandemic.
During the month under review, 18,599 new vehicles were registered, ie 18.87% more year-on-year. The auto-Swiss umbrella recalls Friday in its monthly statement that the previous year had been heavily penalized by delivery difficulties due to the unavailability of certain components.
Compared to July 2019, however, 6919 units are still missing, which shows that “the market decline caused by the Covid pandemic has not yet been overcome”. The deficit since the beginning of the year is close to 40,000 new cars, reports the association of importers.
Year-on-year growth has been there every month since last September, but the industry hasn’t really had much to cheer about. “The situation has certainly improved, but it remains tense if we look at the market data before 2020”, summarizes a spokesperson for auto-suisse, suggesting that the mark of 300,000 vehicles, which was virtually the norm over the previous decade, will no doubt remain wishful thinking again this year.
The market share of grid-rechargeable electric cars (including plug-in hybrids) continued to grow, reaching 29.2% in July. Since the beginning of the year, alternative propulsion (electric, hybrid, gas and hydrogen engines) have represented more than half (54.9%) of the market, compared to 49.5% over the first seven months of 2022.
