70% of Swiss will not travel abroad this summer, according to a study conducted by the HelloSafe platform on several hundred respondents. Inflation is one of the reasons that push a good number of respondents to opt for vacations at home. The study also reveals that, on average, the Swiss who plan to travel will allocate a budget of almost 1,200 francs. It is the people of the Jura who have the biggest budget for their holidays, with 1,450 francs.

The plane is popular, but the train is also attractive

A third of the population therefore intends to leave for new countries. Spain, Greece, Turkey and Egypt are the most popular destinations. The Mediterranean basin is therefore still popular, but the discovery of the United States, Canada or even Norway is also on the program for many Swiss travelers, according to the tour operator HotelPlan. These trips abroad suppose to take the plane; ecological considerations and the climatic emergency do not yet seem to guide the travels of the majority of the population… even if train travel is also attractive, and more and more: “For journeys of less than eight hours, a good number of our customers opt for the train”, explains Nicole Pfammater, CEO of Hotelplan Switzerland. She adds that 90% of the journeys to Paris reserved with her structure are made by train, with a view to saving time and sustainability. Among the most popular rail journeys, there is France, but also Germany, to Hamburg or Munich.

The rail for the holidays in the country

The train also appeals to some Swiss, who will stay in the country this summer. 1 in 5 people, who plan to travel within national borders, should reach their holiday destination by rail. A proportion that Switzerland Tourism and the SBB hope to increase, to make tourism more sustainable.

According to a recent study published in the scientific journal Nature climate change, global tourism is the source of 8% of greenhouse gas emissions. The vectors of pollution are numerous: with transport and the plane in the front line… but also food, accommodation or passenger purchases. /cto
