Switzerland got off to a bad start in the first final phase of the Davis Cup. Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Stricker lose their singles against France, and the doubles also ended disappointingly.

The Swiss Davis Cup team lost the first duel of the final group phase against France. Both Dominic Stricker (ATP 90) and Stan Wawrinka (ATP 40) lost their singles, so the match against “Les Bleus” was already decided 0-2 before the final doubles. This also ended in disappointment at the end of the day.

After a strong start, Stricker atone for a slump in the middle of the match in the 6:3, 1:6, 4:6 win against Adrian Mannarino (ATP 34). After winning the first set, the 21-year-old from Bern had another break chance in the first game of the second round, but he was unable to take advantage of it. The experienced Frenchman then dominated the left-handed duel in the practically empty, atmosphereless Manchester Arena until 2-0 in the deciding set.

Stricker, who reached the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament and thus into the top 100 for the first time at the US Open, caught himself too late. In the third set he didn’t get a break point and ended up losing in just over two hours.

Wawrinka sometimes has no chance

Wawrinka already had his back to the wall in his duel against Ugo Humbert (ATP 36) and had to win in order to avert an early defeat for Switzerland. But the veteran’s performance was disappointing at 4:6, 4:6. The 2014 Davis Cup champion was only able to challenge Humbert in the high-class first set. A break to make it 4:3 decided in favor of the left-hander from Metz.

In the second round, nothing seemed to fit together at the beginning. The Frenchman, who was thirteen years his junior, quickly took the lead 4-0 and 5-1. Wawrinka fended off three match points and made up for a break, but after less than an hour and a half, his defeat and that of his team was clear.

The next disappointment followed in the final double, in which Switzerland could have improved their points account a little. Wawrinka and Marc-Andrea Hüsler (ATP 101) couldn’t keep up with Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Nicolas Mahut (both without an individual classification) and lost 2:6, 2:6 in just 55 minutes.

This is how it goes

On Friday, Switzerland will face hosts Great Britain in the second group game of the first final phase. The Brits are competing with Cameron Norrie (ATP 17), Daniel Evans (27) and Andy Murray (41), among others, and are expected to be cheered on by an enthusiastic audience in the Manchester Arena. The top 2 in each group of four move on to the second final phase (in November in Malaga), where the trophy is effectively at stake.
