Switzerland’s Time Change: From Winter Time to Standard Time and the Debate on Seasonal Time Change

2023-10-29 02:32:05

Switzerland switched to winter time during the night from Saturday to Sunday. At 03:00, the watches and clocks were moved back to 02:00. The night was therefore an hour longer. Daylight saving time will return on March 31.

This is not a change to ‘winter time’, indicated the Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). By changing the time in the fall, we return to standard time. It is by moving the watches forward one hour in June that we switch to summer time, according to him.

Standard time in Switzerland has been Central European time for more than 125 years. The Confederation introduced summer time in 1981, following its European neighbors. Since 1996, all countries of the European Union (EU) and Switzerland have united in unison to set their clocks forward one hour on the last Sunday in March and set them back one hour on the last Sunday in October.

This concordance is mainly motivated by economic reasons. The possible abolition of seasonal time change has become a subject of political discussion in recent years, especially in the EU. But no decision has so far been taken, neither at EU level nor in the States.
