Since yesterday, videos have spread on social media showing a number of young men calling on Syrian refugees via loudspeakers to close their shops in the area and leave.

A number of Burj Hammoud residents and a local source who “An-Nahar” spoke to said that what the youth are doing is welcome, especially since none of the local authorities is organizing or controlling Syrian asylum in our region, and because the Syrians have now controlled most of the shops in Bourj Hammoud. They are competing with the Lebanese citizen for his livelihood, knowing that their existing goods are not equal to our existing goods in terms of type and quality.

Hence, after the crime that targeted the leader of the Lebanese Forces, Pascal Suleiman, in which, according to what appears to have been Syrians involved, there was a spontaneous reaction by a number of young people in the area to pretend and deliberately go out to the street via loudspeakers and call on the Syrians to leave. Region.

The local source indicates that the existing disorganization and chaos also threaten to shake the stability of the region, speaking of many problems and crimes occurring in the region, behind which Syrians stand.

For his part, the mayor of the region, who is responsible for the “Lebanese Forces” in Bourj Hammoud, Michel Harran, confirmed to “An-Nahar” that the forces have nothing to do with the youth initiative, neither from near nor from afar. When the forces want to do anything, they do it openly without fear or shame. What we witnessed in Bourj Hammoud is an individual initiative undertaken by a number of young people in the region who were fed up with the unregulated presence of Syrian refugees. Therefore, we call for organizing and legalizing this asylum, and we are not in favor of infringement and injustice on people.

In turn, the “Lebanese Forces” took action and issued a statement in which it stated that it “called and continues to call from the first moment for the necessity of the return of Syrian refugees to their homes, especially since security in Syria has been restored, and the regime group and their opponents can return to the areas belonging to the regime and the opposition, and therefore there is no justification at all for their continued detention.” Lebanon”.

While she stressed that the demand for the return of Syrian refugees has become more urgent, after it became clear the extent of the number of criminal and security-disrupting acts carried out by some of them, she stressed at the same time that demanding the return of Syrian refugees to their homes is one thing, and acting with hatred and barbarism is a completely different thing. The actions that we see on some social media sites and some of the practices that we witness on the ground are unacceptable on the one hand, and suspicious in form, content, and timing on the other hand.

She said that as much as she calls on the Lebanese authorities to return Syrian refugees to their homes, at the same time she denounces the barbaric attacks to which some of them are exposed.
