Japan’s Luminaris Inc. Launched Wish High, the nation’s first online cram school staffed entirely by VTubers, on February 17, 2026, according to ITmedia News. The platform aims to address educational disparities and engagement issues by offering live, interactive classes taught by virtual personalities.
Wish High will officially begin operations on March 1st, targeting high school students, particularly those in rural areas lacking access to traditional cram schools, or those who do not attend school—a legally permissible option in Japan. The service will offer courses in core high school subjects including mathematics, English, physics, chemistry, classical Japanese literature, world history, Japanese history and geography.
Luminaris, which already operates a cram school in Tokyo and offers VTuber-based educational services for middle schoolers and businesses, describes the instructors as active VTubers—content creators with established online presences and livestreaming channels—rather than simply educators using animated avatars. This distinction is central to the school’s approach, leveraging the existing appeal and engagement these virtual personalities have with younger audiences.
The company identified a growing problem in online education: student disengagement with standard video lessons. “While online education is becoming more common, the issue of students not being able to continue with video lessons and being left behind without understanding has become apparent,” Luminaris stated, as reported by Dexerto. “By combining the flexibility that only online can provide with immersive lessons from VTuber instructors, we are providing an environment where students can continue to learn.”
Monthly tuition for Wish High is set at 9,900 yen, approximately $65 USD, according to multiple reports. The platform is as well accessible to middle school students and adults seeking to review high school-level material. To promote the launch, Luminaris is hosting livestream events featuring the instructors throughout February, allowing potential students to interact with the teachers and learn about the curriculum.
The launch of Wish High reflects the growing VTuber market, which reached approximately $3.99 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $5.38 billion in 2025, with continued expansion to an estimated $80.28 billion by 2034, driven by interactive content and immersive virtual experiences, according to Global Growth Insights.
Luminaris has established a YouTube channel to allow students to become familiar with the instructors outside of formal class time. Two special livestreams are scheduled this month to introduce the teaching staff as a group and provide details on their planned courses.
