Tagesschau spokesman Thorsten Schröder was not completely satisfied the day after his second Ironman start in Hawaii. The 54-year-old needed 11:05:45 hours in the World Championship race over the 3.86 kilometers of swimming, 180.2 kilometers of cycling and 42.2 kilometers of running.

“It’s not the time I was hoping for, but I managed to do the most important thing,” Schröder wrote at Instagram and added: “A very special experience.” In his age group, Schröder came in 72nd place. It took him 1:18:44 to swim in Kailua-Kona Bay. Schröder completed the bike part in 5:33:26. The part-time triathlete, who started for FC St. Pauli, needed 4:00:56 minutes for the final marathon at over 30 degrees and high humidity.
“It was urgently needed to cool down. Lots of ice and water, often. That’s the only way I reached the finish line at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii,” he commented on a photo in which he pours water on his face. After the race he was “really exhausted,” admitted Schröder.
He had qualified for the World Cup at the Ironman in Frankfurt/Main (DIGITAL TELEVISION reported). It wasn’t his first participation in the mecca of triathletes. He started there for the first time in 2017 and crossed the finish line after around 10:56 hours.
Unfortunately, this time he had to put in a few walking deposits for the last twelve kilometers, Schröder reported in the “Welt”. “I wanted to stay below my time from 2017, tried everything again, but couldn’t keep up the pace for long. In the end, the grains were missing.” The day after the race was the first of several without a training plan!
“No sports! Let’s see how long!” Schröder wrote on Instagram.
