Olympic champion in ice dancing Roman Kostomarov had both feet amputated, reports TASS with a link to the source.

“Unfortunately, both feet had to be amputated. The operation went without incident, in general, the body is on the mend. Now there is a fight for hands. Romance in mind. The general condition is improving. But he continues to be in intensive care under the close supervision of doctors, ”the source said.

Earlier on February 7, the telegram channel “112” informed about the amputation of one foot to Kostomarov. The purpose of the operation was to remove tissue necrosis and stop the process of cell death. It is noted that from one leg the dead part of the tissue was cleaned, but on the other the affected area turned out to be large and the ankle had to be completely amputated.

Agency “RIA Novosti”, also citing a source, confirmed that Kostomarov had an operation to amputate part of his leg due to gangrene. “They performed an amputation of part of the lower limb due to gangrene. Gangrene probably developed as a result of complications after pneumonia and the patient being on ECMO, ”the agency quoted the interlocutor as saying.

Figure skating

The hospitalization of the 45-year-old figure skater became known on January 10. Later that day, he was transferred to the Kommunarka Clinical Center and, according to sources, TASS and “RIA Novosti”, connected to an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine, which is used in case of acute respiratory failure. The skater was diagnosed with unilateral pneumonia and influenza.

Two weeks later, Kostomarov was disconnected from the ECMO apparatus, but on January 25, sources TASS and Match TV reported on the continuing need for mechanical ventilation. Earlier this week, sources close to the skater told RBC Sport that his condition had improved.

Last week, sources said that Kostomarov had developed gangrene and was in danger of amputation. It was noted that doctors are postponing the operation for fear that a patient in such a serious condition may not survive it.

Kostomarov is the champion of the 2006 Olympics, two-time world champion (2004, 2005) and three-time winner of the European Championships (2004, 2005, 2006) paired with Tatiana Navka.
