After the death of a fan at one of her concerts in Rio de Janeiro, US singer Taylor Swift has canceled another appearance in the Brazilian metropolis due to the heat. “We have made the decision to postpone today’s performance due to the extreme temperatures in Rio,” the musician wrote on Instagram on Saturday evening. “The safety and well-being of my fans, my colleagues and team members are always our top priority.”

Brazil is currently suffering from a heat wave. The temperature was 42.5 degrees in Rio on Saturday afternoon. Swift played the first of six planned concerts in the country on Friday in high temperatures. She was scheduled to perform again in Rio on Saturday and Sunday.

However, Friday’s concert was overshadowed by the death of a fan. At the beginning of the show, a 23-year-old woman collapsed. She was taken to a hospital and died. According to the city health department, the cause of death is still under investigation. Fans had previously complained on social media that they were prevented from bringing water bottles into the stadium despite the high temperatures. Brazilian media reported that firefighters had to treat more than a thousand fans who collapsed in the heat.

Justice Minister intervenes

Clips from the concert show Swift interrupting her concert at one point to alert organizers to a group of fans in desperate need of water. In another video you can see the singer being handed a water bottle on stage and throwing it to a fan.

After the concert, Swift expressed shock about the young woman’s death on Instagram. “I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it breaks my heart to say we lost a fan before my show tonight,” the musician wrote on Instagram. Their thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.

As the young woman’s friends told the Brazilian media, the 23-year-old psychology student had fulfilled a dream with the concert tickets. Photos show her in a good mood in the stadium wearing an “I love TS” shirt.

Brazilian Justice Minister Flávio Dino responded to the incident on Saturday with a hastily issued decree. Water bottles for personal use must therefore be permitted at events. In extreme heat, the organizer must also provide free drinking water.

As the organizer announced on X, the postponed concert will now take place on Monday. He had previously agreed to improve the situation in the stadium. It was initially unclear whether the concert planned for Sunday would take place.
