Teachers from half of the secondary schools in Ticino took part in a one-day strike on Wednesday organized by public officials, affiliated to the cantonal provident institute. They are protesting against the 40% reduction in 2nd pillar pensions.

About 600 people took part in the strike, the head of the Network for the Defense of Pensions (ErreDIPI), Enrico Quaresmini, told Keystone-ATS. According to the head of secondary schools in the canton, Tiziana Zaninelli, 15 secondary schools (20 according to the organizers), out of the 36 in the canton, have joined the movement.

Pupils were welcomed in all establishments. The strikers took to the streets to protest against the progressive reduction of retirement pensions in Lugano, Locarno, Mendrisio and Bellinzona. In addition to the teachers, the civil servants of many cantonal services took part in the strike supported by the left-wing parties and the Unia and VPOD unions.

Parliament called to intervene

The reduction in 2nd pillar pensions concerns 17,000 members of the cantonal provident institute, said its vice-director Fabrizio Garbani-Nerini. “The gradual reduction of pensions (which will come into force on January 1, 2024) is an inevitable transition due to the significant deficit that our fund had annually,” he explains.

According to him, one solution is to increase second pillar contributions from employers and affiliates, but this is a political maneuver that must be submitted to parliament. “This proposal could be discussed in the coming months”, specifies the official, “and it will therefore be a question of the distribution of payments between employers and employees”.

The strike movement has made a lot of waves in recent days in Ticino, mainly because of the support of teachers from some secondary schools in the canton, including an establishment in Bellinzona.
