Teachers trained to use video games in their lessons

No, no, you’re not dreaming ! At the moment, teachers are training to learn how to use video games as a teaching aid… “I play Zelda”, explains Nicolas Genreith, professor of geography and history. “The goal is to create a lesson around landscape observation for first secondary school students.”

So it’s very serious. It is not a question of playing for pleasure, but of using the video game, in the same way as a portfolio of documents or texts, as course support. “The aim is that the console or PC is in the classroom, in the hands of the students and that the lesson is given using the video game,” explains François Hardy, the trainer and assistant professor at the Haute Charlemagne school.

To do this, teachers must imagine how the video game can be integrated into the course. For history or geography lessons, historical games, such as RPG (role play gaming) or management games, can be used. The historical reproduction capabilities of video games can be valuable. Not only to motivate students, but also to help them realize what ancient cities looked like, for example.

For Nicolas Genreith, awakening students’ curiosity will be one of the great challenges of teaching in the future. “Color photos take 5 minutes, but the students quickly get tired of them. And with the new pact of excellence, we will have to find ways to motivate them. Video games are one of the gateways, but not the only one.”

A new tool therefore at the service of teachers, but which requires a lot of preparation work, to know the game in particular, as well as a certain investment on the part of schools, to acquire the consoles.
