The question of Western Sahara was on the menu of talks, this Thursday, June 9 in Algiers, between the Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro, who has been making an official visit to Algeria since Wednesday, and his Algerian counterpart.
In a statement to the press, Abdelmadjid Tebboune stressed that “Algeria shares dense historical relations with Venezuela, marked by the defense of just causes in the world and the rights of peoples to freedom and development, far from the residues inherited from the era of tyranny, exploitation and injustice”.
He welcomed the convergence of views of the two countries on this subject. “We have agreed to support the Saharawi people until they achieve their right to self-determination through a referendum and… their independence”.
Same story with Nicolas Maduro. “We expressed our admiration to the Algerian president for the policy in favor of Western Sahara. The world must react to protect these people. It is high time to express solidarity with the people of Western Sahara,” he said.
Algeria and Venezuela recognize the “Democratic Sahrawi Arab Republic”. Morocco has chosen, for its part, to support the opposition of the Maduro regime, accepting the appointment, in 2019, of José Ignacio Guédez in his capacity as representative of Juan Guaido, self-proclaimed interim president of Venezuela.
