Teenager dies after shooting himself with a police officer’s gun – 2024-03-26 02:24:36

The incident occurred Sunday night after the teenager knocked on the entrance to the City of Industry County Sheriff’s Station, about 50 kilometers from Los Angeles.

When the officers on duty opened the door, “the minor ran into the lobby, reached for the deputy’s (sheriff’s) holstered firearm and seized it,” detailed a statement from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

“A struggle occurred between the agents and the minor, who was armed with the delegate’s weapon. During the struggle, the minor suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the note stated.

After attending to the emergency, paramedics declared death at the same scene of the incident.

Authorities did not reveal the identity or age of the teenager, but said she was of Hispanic origin.

The case is being investigated, but authorities insist that “it is not an incident involving a delegate shooting.”

According to preliminary information, the incident resulted from a call about a family altercation to which the police station had responded shortly before.

Violent encounters between police and civilians are common in the United States.

More than 1,100 people died from police shootings in the last 12 months, according to a newspaper count The Washington Post.

The debate over policing, like that over carrying and using weapons, divides the United States.

In 2020 and 2021, gunshots were the leading cause of death in children and adolescents in the United States, according to official numbers.

Although polls show that public opinion defends stricter regulations, the powerful firearms lobby and a traditional gun culture have made action in Congress difficult.
