“It is in potential threat”: Government warns of damage to the Mayan Biosphere Reserve
Ministry of Culture and Sports issues a statement and reminds about prison sentences for those responsible for damaging the cultural heritage of Guatemalans.

The Ministry of Culture and Sports (Micude) of Guatemala warned that is monitoring what is currently happening within the Mayan Biosphere area, the largest protected area in the country, in the department of Petén.
The Micude said in a statement that several events in the area represent “a potential threat to flora and fauna”, as well as archaeological sites belonging to to the Mayan civilization”.

The ministry called on groups of archaeologists and researchers so that they take due precautions, and urged groups planning field studies in the area to refrain from doing so.
He remembered that The archaeological sites belong to Guatemalans and must be under the protection of the State, and that the Biosphere was declared Tangible Cultural Heritage of the Nation, so its alteration or destruction will be punished with prison.
