Telecoms: Cellnex ends 2021 with strong but double-edged growth

In telecoms, few companies are recording double-digit growth rates. This is however the case of Cellnex, the European champion of telecom towers with almost 102,000 pylons in 12 countries including France. In 2021, the turnover of the Spanish group exploded by 58%, to 2.5 billion euros, according to the results published on Friday. Its Ebitda does it even better: +63%, to 1.9 billion euros.

These very good results are not really a surprise. Cellnex has pulled out all the stops in recent years to buy mobile phone towers all over Europe, to which it then leases access to telecom operators. In 2021 alone, the Barcelona group integrated acquisitions representing a total investment… of almost 19 billion euros. At the end of 2020, the group had bought the 24,600 towers of the Hong Kong conglomerate CK Hutchison in Europe for 10 billion euros, before winning Hivory, the joint venture between KKR and Altice France hosting the 10,500 towers used by SFR.
