Teru Nakahara’s Transfer to Tokyo Verdy: A Promising Move for Promotion to J1

On July 21st, Teru Nakahara finished his team practice and responded to the interview.

―What kind of atmosphere do you feel after joining Tokyo Verdy?

The team is fighting for promotion, so I think the atmosphere is very good. They have young players and they have a lot of momentum.

―Please tell us why you decided to transfer.

At Cerezo, since last season, I have often been on the bench due to my position, and this season I have been unable to overturn that. Then, when I was asked to join the team this summer, I thought that I had to participate in matches in order to grow as a soccer player once again. After talking with the team that was competing for promotion to J1, and with Manager Shirofuku, I decided that I would be a good fit for the kind of soccer that Verdy is playing.

―You were also participating in Cerezo Osaka.

I agree. There were a few injuries, but basically I was a member and played from the middle. I’m not a speedster who starts halfway through and gets results in the remaining time. I am particular about participating from the start, and since I am already 27 years old, in order to go one step further (the rest of this season), rather than spending half a year as a substitute, I would like to come to this team and produce results myself so that Verdy can be promoted to J1. If I do that, I think my own evaluation will naturally rise, and I want to stick to the results.

―Was Verdy’s team style also a big factor in your decision to transfer?

They have an offensive style, and I got the impression that their football is very easy to play as they attack at a good tempo while using short passes. There are many players who have actually practiced and are skilled, so I think they can play good football.

―You were also enrolled in Montedio Yamagata and played against Verdy. Please tell us your impression of the team at that time.

Of course, the manager at that time and now is different, so I can’t say anything about it, but I played against Verdy in the second match of the first season after I moved to Yamagata. At that time, it was the first game in Yamagata where I played as a starting member, and I was able to play well from there, so it was a good opportunity for me.

―Are you the type of person who proactively calls out to teammates around you off the pitch?

I wouldn’t go at all (laughs). But on the pitch, I firmly convey what I thought. There are a lot of young players participating, and I’ve become a midfielder, so I want to communicate well. Off the pitch, I still haven’t figured out what kind of character (each player) is, and the people around me feel the same way about me, so I think it will naturally deepen as we play the game.
