Tesla buys cobalt and nickel from Glencore, a mining giant. But this one is the subject of at least 70 allegations of human rights violations, and has been for several years. The company has received accusations of corruption and poor working conditions, according to the Business and Human Rights Resource Center. It is moreover the second consecutive year that Glencore tops the list in this area.
Tesla: From mistreating employees to bribing officials
Caroline Avan, researcher for the center in question, explains: “We find that the risk of abuse increases as pressure to extract new minerals intensifies […] It’s obvious that we expect big companies like Tesla to use their influence on the sector as a whole and that they not only ask, but demand that their suppliers do not commit human rights abuses.”
More than 500 allegations of abuse would have been listed since 2010. These cover a wide range of potential harms, ranging from poor treatment of workers to the environmental pollutionto triggering conflicts or paying bribes to officials.
All of these accusations relate to the exploitation of minerals used in renewable energies, electric vehicles and batteries. It’s about cobalt, copper, lithium, manganese, nickel and zinc.
