Tesla Charging operations lead Max de Zegher explained via social media platform X that the company treats charging strictly as a cost center for robotaxi expansion. “Every penny matters for Robotaxi scale, including charging,” de Zegher noted. The strategy involves routing vehicles to public Superchargers during off-peak night hours when utilization drops, while simultaneously developing proprietary infrastructure optimized for low-cost real estate and back-to-back sessions.

Unlike public stalls designed for customer convenience, these depots prioritize high-density, low-capex execution. Dispatching vehicles to these proprietary stalls relies on trip-planning fundamentals that Tesla has refined over more than a decade, though vehicles currently remain plugged in manually by human operators.
Private V4 Infrastructure in Arizona
Permit filings uncovered by infrastructure observer MarcoRP reveal that Tesla is targeting Arizona’s East Valley for its first non-public charging locations. In Chandler, plans show a 56-stall layout utilizing next-generation V4 hardware on an industrial parcel situated along South Roosevelt Avenue. A secondary site in Mesa, located at 5349 E Main Street, carries the same restricted, private-use designation.

These industrial zones feature robust electrical preparations, including support from new Salt River Project (SRP) transformers, heavy-duty switching cabinets, and underground line upgrades. Arizona offers an optimal proving ground for autonomous fleets due to its grid-like street layouts and mild year-round climate, which helps minimize optical sensor and camera degradation.

Deploying V4 hardware in closed industrial depots allows Tesla to mitigate vandalism risks, eliminate public congestion, and avoid scheduling conflicts with retail drivers. Furthermore, V4 architecture supports bidirectional energy flow.
