If the Toyota RAV4 remains the best-selling car in the world in 2022, electric cars are starting to gain in importance. This is particularly the case for those of Tesla, which are two to find their place in the ranking. A historic achievement.

Everything seems to be going well for Tesla, which posted very satisfactory results during the 1st quarter. Because if its margins are down slightly, its sales have literally exploded in recent months. In total, no less than 412,180 copies of the SUV and the sedan were delivered since the beginning of the year in the world.
A historic feat
A great success for the manufacturer’s two star vehicles, which also enabled it to break a record last year with more than one million cars sold. Enough to allow the manufacturer to remain the world number 1 ahead of BYD and Volkswagen. But no question of stopping on such a good path for the firm of Elon Musk.
Because it has also just achieved another equally incredible performance. Indeed, and as revealed by the figures of the automotive data specialist Hundredthe constructor places two models in the top 10 best-selling cars in the world. A ranking that takes into account all engines, not just electric cars.
If the latter is still dominated by the Toyota RAV4sold over one million copies worldwide in 2022, the Tesla Model Y is placed in 3ème position. In total, therefore, 747,000 units have been registered worldwide, an increase of 91% compared to 2021. A success that had already been confirmed by the firm Focus2Move, although the figures announced were less in line with reality.

The electric SUV, whose price has recently been increased, still appeals to customers. The sedan also shines
Indeed, the manufacturer recently announced that it had broken a new record, being able to assemble no less than 5,000 copies of the Model Y in its Berlin factory. It is currently the only vehicle of the brand to be manufactured in Europe (in Long Autonomy and Performance version), the others being produced in China or the United States. This should allow him to still be eligible for the ecological bonus.
And this even if the government decided to reserve it for cars assembled on the Old Continent. But where is the Model 3, another star vehicle from Tesla? To find her, you have to go down to 10th position. The sedan remains a little behind the SUV, with all the same 482,000 copies sold during the last year. Sales are however down slightly by 3%, as customers no doubt preferred to opt for the Model Y.
And this even if the sedan remains less expensive, sinceit starts from 41,990 euros in France, compared to 46,990 euros for the electric SUV. Both are in any case eligible for the bonus of 5,000 euros reserved for vehicles under 47,000 euros. The manufacturer will still have to pay attention to the growing Chinese competition, which could make it have a difficult year. According to Jato, sales of builders in the Middle Kingdom have jumped 48% compared to 2021.
So much so that specialists fear that Europe will become more than a simple importer. Moreover, according to the Focus2Move ranking, the 10th position would be occupied by the Wuling HongGuang MINI EV, with 554,000 copies sold worldwide. The Chinese electric city car is also sold in Europe as the Freze Nikrob. We contacted Jato to understand why this Chinese electric car did not appear in the ranking. Because if that were the case, the Tesla Model 3 would be ejected from the top 10.
