This Southeast Asian hotspot is illuminating the pivotal transition between the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
Mapping the Siamese Giants Across Geological Gaps
Northeastern Thailand has transformed into a bustling paleontological hub. Under a makeshift roof protecting a dig site at Phu Wiang National Park, scientists are meticulously uncovering ancient remains. This work builds on decades of regional exploration. According to Suravech Suteethorn, deputy director of Mahasarakham University’s Paleontological Research and Education Center, local finds act as crucial missing pieces in the global evolutionary puzzle. These specimens offer direct insight into creatures roaming the planet roughly 140 million years ago.
The region’s unique geological profile gives researchers an advantage. As Thitiwoot Sethapanichsakul, a PhD student at University College London who co-authored the Nagatitan paper in the journal Scientific Reports, points out, the local dry climate and sparse vegetation leave fossil-bearing rocks exposed.
Recent Identifications Expand the Prehistoric Catalog
Verification takes time. Many specimens confirmed this year were actually unearthed a decade or more ago, requiring extensive laboratory analysis before formal identification. Among these are two landmark species that highlight the scale of Southeast Asia’s prehistoric fauna.
- Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis: A massive 27-tonne herbivore that lived 100-120 million years ago, discovered in Chaiyaphum province.
- Uragasaurus kalasinensis: A plant-eater stretching up to 20 meters (65 feet) long, dating back approximately 150 million years.
According to Varuvudh Suteethorn, a veteran paleontologist working alongside his son Suravech, the discovery of Uragasaurus was announced last month, marking the first time a dinosaur of its kind has been identified in Thailand.
International Collaboration and the Road to Species Number Sixteen
The research ecosystem in Khon Kaen province extends far beyond local institutions. Visiting international experts, such as Richard Cloutier—a paleontology professor from Canada’s Université du Québec à Rimouski—have noted that Thailand is the hotspot for research and discovery within Southeast Asia.

Mahasarakham University leads the field in this scientific push. Researchers at the institution are actively processing shelves laden with jagged fragments of spines, necks, and limbs. If current excavation timelines hold, these ongoing tests and verifications could push Thailand’s official count of unique dinosaur species to 16 within the coming months.
