The app from the founders of Instagram has launched a text-to-speech feature with over 30 voices available.

Artifact gets a new feature powered by artificial intelligence (IA). Developed by the founders of Instagram, the personalized news app now allows articles to be listened to instead of read. In partnership with Speechify, it has just launched a text-to-speech feature, not only offering a robotic-sounding voice like other tools. It features more than 30 natural-sounding voices, available for free, including those of two celebrities: Gwyneth Paltrow and Snoop Dogg.

The voices are only available in English at the moment, but users have the option to customize them with accents, including those from the UK, Australia, and South Africa. They can also choose the reading speed of the articles.

Users can access this new feature by tapping the play button in the bottom bar of an article. From there, they can listen to the article while browsing other news in the app. With text-to-speech, Artifact aims to help users “to create more flexibility in the way [ils peuvent] catch up [leur] delay and stay informed, [qu’ils soient] on the go, running or just doing household chores”as she stated in a blog post.

At the moment, this feature is only available on iOS. It is also necessary to have the latest version of the application on iPhone to use it. It will soon be available on Android.

Text-to-speech is one of the many ways Artifact leverages AI. Using this technology to offer a personalized news feed to users, she has also been using it since June to rewrite titles marked as soliciting on her feed.
