There was a time when games were on floppy disk or cartridge and the size allocated to these programs was tiny. With the advent of optical media, it was believed that the space problem would no longer be a concern for developers. A sweet chimera.

CD, DVD, Blu-Ray… always more space!

For anyone who has experienced the evolution of video games and the media supporting studio productions, the advent of the CD-ROM truly marked a turning point in developers’ thinking. Long narrow, the ambitions of creators then exploded and many works, which we thought impossible until then, began to flourish on the shelves of specialized stores. By necessity, the CD-ROM coincided with the democratization of 3D, but it also allowed the emergence of symphonic music and spectacular productions. It was also a turning point on an economic level for many studios who no longer had to overcome the astronomical costs of manufacturing cartridges for consoles. Final Fantasy, long owned by Nintendo, then found itself on PlayStation because the advent of such a support allowed the creation of cutscenes, 3D scenes, orchestral melodies and promised considerable financial benefits for Squaresoft.

Over time, the CD-ROM emancipated itself from its original form and we saw the emergence of alternative versions of optical media. For example, there was the GD-ROM on Dreamcast (roughly speaking, a CD-ROM with more disk space) then it was the DVD’s turn to take over, first on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, and then with the mini-DVD on Gamecube. With the arrival of Sony’s first portable console, the PSP, there was even talk of UMD – for Universal Media Disc! Optical media continued to grow until we reached the Blu-Ray we know today. For a long time, it was thought that the sheer size of these discs would be enough (at least for a while), but it quickly turned out that wasn’t going to be the case. Since then, the size of games has literally exploded and there are, so to speak, almost no complete games on Blu-Ray. Even when you buy a physics game, it regularly happens that three quarters of the game must be downloaded! But for its next game, Sony has decided to opt for another solution!

A first in the history of the PS5!

Yes you are not dreaming ! Horizon Forbidden West, which has just been released in a Complete Edition, is the very first PlayStation 5 game to fit on… 2 Blu-Ray!

Released on consoles on October 6 and planned for PC at the beginning of next year, the game from Guerrilla Games brings together two adventures which represent a total of 121 GB of data. For this Complete Edition, which includes the Burning Shores expansion, the game’s original soundtrack, an artbook, a comic and digital objects, Sony and the Dutch studio have decided to offer the whole thing in the form of two Blu-Rays . Where this is a first is that Nioh offered, in its Collection edition, two optical media, but they were two different titles. This time, we’re talking about an adventure and its expansion, which is new on PlayStation 5! It is also important to point out that this Complete Edition is only available on PS5 (and soon PC), but not on PS4. Indeed, the Burning Shores expansion remains exclusive to game consoles.
