How does digestion take place?

First of all, it is necessary to understand that from putting a food in the mouth until it is eliminated through the stools, the average digestion time is more or less 24 hours. The complete cycle of digestion includes different stages.

Every bite is first chewed. Your teeth cut the food and your saliva coats it so it is broken down by enzymes. During swallowing, food is directed towards theesophagus then stomach. This is responsible for mixing the products ingested.

This phase lasts between three and four hours. The food is then reduced to mush by gastric juices and passes into thesmall intestine so that the nutrients essential to the body are absorbed. The stage intended for intestinal absorption lasts 6 to 7 hours.

Then another period of 7 hours is necessary for the food residue to pass into the colon. They are then released little by little towards the rectum where they will remain for at least six hours before being evacuated by the in it.
