Almost two weeks after the spectacular landslide that occurred on August 27 in the Maurienne valley (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), Clément Beaune announced the reopening of the A43 this weekend. This major axis between France and Northern Italy will finally reopen this weekend, ” without a doubt ” from Saturday, said the Minister responsible for Transport this Friday.

“I will make a final technical point this morning with the motorway services, the department, the state services, and of course the elected officials but over the weekend, the reopening of the A43 and once again, probably as soon as tomorrow (Saturday) can be done »he declared on France Bleu Pays de Savoie before going to Modane during the day.

Launch of work on the Mont-Blanc tunnel

The minister also announced the launch of work on the Mont-Blanc tunnel in ” A few days “ and will last « probably around seven weeks » instead of fifteen initially planned.

After discussions with Italy, « nWe will undoubtedly reduce the work period this fall in the Mont Blanc tunnel. We were around 15 weeks (…) it will probably be around seven weeks of work. (…) So a slightly delayed closure, a slightly shorter closure of the Mont Blanc tunnel », he explained, adding that the work schedule will be clarified “in the next few days”.

The Mont-Blanc tunnel, where on average around 1,700 trucks and 3,600 cars pass through each day, with peaks of more than 6,000 in August, was to be closed for more than three months to traffic, from September 4 to 18. December, for heavy work, then as much in 2024. But, due to the landslide, Rome had asked Paris to suspend their launch while waiting for a return to normal in order to avoid congestion following the closure to trucks of the Fréjus tunnel also arising from the incident of August 27.
